KAHLIL JOSEPH AT JAX

JAX Presents Films by Kahlil Joseph

The Jersey Art Exchange (JAX) is honored to present the work of Kahlil Joseph as an ongoing exhibition from March to May 2017.

Kahlil Joseph is an artist & director, widely known for his ground-breaking music videos, including Beyonce’s “Lemonade” and Flying Lotus “Until The Quiet Comes,” and has directed concert videos for Kendrick Lamar. He is also increasingly known within museum and gallery circles as a compelling video artist whose unique approach to filmmaking blurs the line between music video and new media art. His work touches on the heart of the black urban experience and depicts the African American community with depth, warmth and vulnerability. His surreal imagery renders a world of isolation and violence and paints it with hope, and in the words of Hilton Als of The New Yorker, “horrifying beauty.”

His unconventional narrative structures are inspired by artists such as Terrence Malick, Doug Aitken and Andrei Tarkovsky. This Los Angeles based filmmaker recently received a Guggenheim Fellowship for his ”unique approach in developing his art and his films.”
